General information

Thanks to scientific advances, we know that climate change is the most urgent concern for human health in the 21st century and, therefore, its mitigation is the greatest public health opportunity of this generation. The climate crisis involves droughts, floods, storms, heat waves, rising sea levels and global warming. These consequences threaten the health of the world's most vulnerable populations . Fortunately, some groups are mobilizing, but it is not enough. Scientists continue to alert the society, but the information that reaches us is not always understandable. Politicians do not act, the administration's campaigns do not work or they tire us. We need to reach every corner.

What if we try to reach the public through art? Fleeing from large and expensive facilities, we believe in small events, easy to access and that help bring climate reflection closer to the neighborhoods. We propose a project that, combining art and science, creates new languages accessible to eveyone and helps to decipher the results of scientific research thanks to inspiring images that are an invitation to environmental empathy, to be aware of the environment that surrounds us and to collaboration and neighborhood action. We are convinced that another world is possible and that the seed of the future grows in our hands!!

  • Penjant d'un fil * (Hanging by a thread) is the first Climate Change art exhibition organized by Pulmons de Barri, based on the work of the painter Didac Ferrer. It will take place in a modernist building in the Gracia neighborhood, the Espai Mosaïk, and it will not leave you indifferent. The tour through the different atmospheres is intentionally designed to promote an emotional and sensitive reaction ** to the imminent consequences of climate change.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The Penjant d'un fil experience is based on the watercolor works made in an idyllic and threatened landscape of the Costa Brava, the Cala S'Alguer , an emotionally significant place for the artist Didac Ferrer . The artist not only captures the actual current landscape, but tries to reflect how it could become 50 years from now. Thanks to this visionary journey, where present and future are contrasted, the visitor actively contacts a metaphorical space that underlines the risk of destruction of the world in which we live and that we still want to bequeath to our children and grandchildren.

This artistic work is complemented by the latest scientific information on the climate change issue and makes it understandable to all. The sample includes testimonies and interviews of scientists specialized in climate change, who share experiences and opinions, showing the most humanized and close side of science . This work will lead visitors to experience, reflect, and understand the opportunities to co-create an alternative future . Therefore, the people who participate in the experience do not have the role of passive observers who receive data, but rather interact, respond and propose. They add their own value by contributing with their perspectives and potential desires to protect their favorite corners.

Therefore, with this project we intend to:

  • Encourage the dissemination of the impact of climate change thanks to the combination of art and science
  • Generate emotional and reflective awareness among the public
  • Promote individual and collaborative action and the development of the social fabric to generate change
  • Demonstrate the leading role that we all have in the bottom up revolution to stop the climate crisis

Why this is important

The Penjant d'un fil exhibition can be experienced individually or in a group. It lasts for approximately 30 minutes. Experiencing it activates awareness and climate action based on two ideas:

  • Perceive the deep feeling of the risk of destruction of nature and our society.
  • Generate a positive message that leads to personal commitment and collective action.

It is aimed at a general public and, in particular, at young people and families interested in the challenges that await us; and comes in the form of a personalized experience by appointment. Each participant (or participating group) will take a reproduction of the sample in a booklet to keep alive the memory and the commitment he/she acquires.

The activity is conceived as a prototype of a climatic experience transferable to many contexts and with many artistic disciplines. The entire project has been planned from a logic of simplicity, intimacy, collaboration, awareness, proximity, reasonable use of technology and resources, and sustainability.

Team and experience

Didac Ferrer

Tireless co-creator, father of three daughters, nature lover, engineer and painter. I experience different ways of changing the world, always in good company: both from the University, where I work, and with the Tarpuna cooperative, which I helped create a few years ago, and now with Pulmons de Barri (Community lungs), where we believe in art as a tool for transformation. I have been exhibiting my work in watercolor for a few years, and now I want to combine the various passions of my life in a project.

Pulmons de Barri

Collective of artists and scientists who mix science and art to improve urban and planetary health. We do strange things like public awareness of urban health problems, communication training using artistic tools or theatrical improvisation applied to innovation.

  • Isa García : Graduated in Contemporary History and in Social and Cultural Anthropology, with a Master's Degree in Teacher Training and a Postgraduate Degree in Communication and Science. She has worked 7 years as a Documentalist (scientific data management) and 4 years as a Project Manager dealing with research projects. In addition, she has 6 years of experience teaching spoken word and communication in educational centers, universities, and public libraries. She's been a slammer for 7 years; co-organizer of Slam Poetry Santako (2019-current); and was President of the National Poetry Slam Federation Spain (2019-2021).

  • Pablo Luna : Holds a degree in Economics (2007) with training in Art Direction at the Miami Ad School (2011). He has been Senior Art Director at Lola MullenLowe Barcelona since 2017. He has been working as an advertising creative since 2011 in advertising agencies such as Draft FCB New York, McCann Spain and Publicis Madrid. He is a professor of Concept Ideas at the Barcelona School of Creativity. He has been awarded for his campaigns at festivals such as El Sol (2016) and El Club de Creativos (2019).

  • Jaime Benavides : Civil Engineer with a Master in Artificial Intelligence and a PhD in Environmental Engineering (UPC). He lives in New York since 2021 where he works as a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University in the area of environmental health. During his doctorate in Barcelona he developed an air quality model for Barcelona at BSC. Artistically, Jaime is a theatrical improviser, he has received classes in Torino (Italy), in Granada and in Barcelona. Jaime uses theater to enable other people to make powerful presentations related to environmental health and to communicate scientific results of his research.
