General information

Synopsis of the documentary:

After the presentation of the pioneering report on the incidence of torture and ill-treatment between 1960 and 2014, commissioned by the Basque Government, the film's director, Ander Iriarte, suspects that like many others, what his father went through in prison was torture. As he resolves his suspicions and joins the forensic doctors, psychologists and lawyers who have participated in the report, the director delves into concepts such as modern torture, the torture environment and the Istanbul Protocol, giving us an insight into the reality of torture in the western world and the possible ways of taking action against it.

Description of the project:

This is a risky project, uncomfortable for some and complicated for all, but at present, the production is formed by an alliance of MIROKUTANA (BD13), IRUSOIN, (Agur Etxebeste, Loreak, Handia) and GAZTIBELTZA, which give body and guarantee to the project.

In 2016, the director of the documentary had the opportunity to attend the presentation of the "Project for the investigation of torture in the Basque Country (1960-2013)" and impressed by what he was able to see and hear, he made the decision to turn that report into the basis for a documentary. After presenting his approach and vision of the project to the authors, who themselves are the focus of the documentary, he wrote a first version of the script alongside the researcher Olatz Retegui.

From this point onwards, the project has had its first successes and has obtained the help of the Basque Government for the development of the script, which in turn has enabled us to present it at the pitching held by the association of scriptwriters of the Basque Country. It is at this point that the project takes hold, and IRUSOIN joins the project.

With this new alliance, the project began to work with a more international perspective and was selected to participate in the San Sebastian International Film Festival's documentary co-production forum. The fact that we are tackling the problem from a local perspective, we believe, does not make it any less international, and the same was to be thought of by the jury of the forum for documentary co-productions of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, made up of the editing committees of -TVE, EITB, ARTE, RADIO CANADA , KCET LINK TV, TREELINE DISTRIBUTION, TV3, AL JAZEERA, STVand TG4- by awarding it the "Threeline" prize for the best documentary project.

After Jorge Gil joined the writing of the script, the project obtained the production aid of the Basque Government and the support of Filmax, which ensured us an international distribution. In addition, the project became an international co-production, thanks to the support of Gastibeltza, with whom we managed to add the participation of the Basque television station Kanaldude and the support of the Aquitaine region.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The aims of the documentary:

This project is born from a strong defence of human rights and talks about a problem that concerns the whole planet, but especially Europe and North America: the use of modern torture as a measure of coercion.

Torture is a reality all over the planet, but we are able to prove it here, and when we say we, we indirectly mean The Basque Institute of Criminology, with the report based on an initiative of the Basque Government's Department for Peace and Coexistence and endorsed by the United Nations' Rapporteurship on Torture and Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the Scientific Council of the International Criminal Court, among others.

In our technical team, we know that the audiovisual media has the potential to reach a wide and diverse audience, and therefore, we believe it is the ideal device to publicise such an important and unprecedented project as the one carried out by the IVAC. The recognition of truth constitutes the foundation of international laws for historical justice, because without truth no reparation is possible and without such reparation, injustices will always be reproduced.

To quote Duarte Nuno, president of the Scientific Council of the International Criminal Court: "In torture, the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, as it is practiced by those who would make the determination to eradicate it. Its denunciation is a tortuous but imperative path for a guarantor society. That is why we must never be discouraged, but rather: persist, resist and insist, and never give up. Because things work out in the end".

THE GOAL:

This is a complex project, and despite the enormous work done, the number of grants needed to complete the budget is not always reached. Our objective with Crowdfunding is that, whatever happens, we can ensure the minimum to cover the expenses of the shooting, which is the responsibility assumed by MIROKUTANA, as co-producer of the project. Since post-production and distribution costs will be assumed by the other parties, this documentary will have a release date and distribution channels in proper conditions.

Why this is important

My name is Ander Iriarte and I live within the European Union, in a representative democracy and in a state like Spain, signatory of all international treaties on Human Rights. I am from the Basque Country, and despite everything, I belong to a torturing environment, without really understanding what it means. So I ask myself: what is torture in itself? What meaning do we give to that idea? To what extent was my father tortured? And if it were a perverse game, have modern societies extended the limits of its practice? If this is so, then words, laws and sentences have become too small for us.

We have had to wait until the second decade of this century for a modern Western state to make an official study within its borders, involving its law enforcement agencies. By making Crack Sounds, my aim is to use the Basque case to show that torture is not a discontinued practice and that it can be happening very close to any of us, within the constitutional democracies that are supposed to guarantee our inalienable rights. The film seeks to expose what torture is today and what circumstances may lead to its proliferation.

-Our Crowdfunding audiences:

Paraphrasing the intervention of the Director of Coexistence and Human Rights of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa; Marivel Baquero, in the presentation of the report: "Investigating torture, getting closer to its reality does not legitimise ETA's violence, but puts democratic principles and the safeguarding of Human Rights and the dignity of people to the fore".

The use of torture is a complex issue in the West and especially polarised in the Basque Country. But it is a problem that concerns all of you as citizens, whatever your ideological position, since torture is something that has been and is being applied (,) by governments of all colours. And that is why we appeal to you with our crowdfunding campaign, because you are committed to human rights, above any other ideological consideration.

On behalf of the whole team involved in the project, we would like to thank you in advance.

Team and experience

MIROKUTANA

MIROKUTANA was founded in 2016 and the philosophy on which it bases its production has three pillars: culture, collaboration and social awareness. The production company includes works for cinema, television and advertising.

Despite its short history, the fruit of its work has been seen in festivals such as SSIFF, Sitges, Malaga, Alcances, Semici and Aguilar del Campo.

In 2017 they presented the short film "Lisbeth", made with the support of the Basque Government, and began to develop their first full-length documentary "Bihar dok 13", which was finally released at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, in co-production with REC Grabaketa Estudioa.

Between 2018 and 2019 they produced the short films "Emarri" and "Mirokutana", both supported by the Basque Government and in line with the vision of the world that characterises the production company.

The project El sonido Del Crack participated in the documentary co-production forum of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Threeline prize. This year they are releasing their next documentary, Fuego al Hielo, their third feature-length documentary and the first made in collaboration with an independent director.

IRUSOIN

Irusoin was founded in 1982, as a production company of feature-length documentaries, fiction and animation. Its productions have been selected and awarded prizes at many international film festivals and are a benchmark for Basque and international cinema.

To be highlighted:

1 Goya for the best animation film for Karramarro uhartea.

10 Goyas and the special prize of the jury in the International Film Festival of San Sebastian for Handia.

2 Goyas, Forqué award for best film and award for best director, script and basque cinema at the San Sebastian International Film Festival for La trinchera infinita.

In addition, Loreak's two Goya award nominations, and being the Spanish Film Academy's candidate for the Oscars should be mentioned.

GASTIBELTZA FILMAK

The aim of Gastibeltza Filmak, a company created in the spring of 2018 in Senpere, is to participate in the development and promotion of Basque cinema.

Despite his young age, the production company has collaborated on several feature films as a co-producer, such as
“Gure Oroitzapenak”, “Jainkoak ez dit Barkatzen” and “Caminho Longe”, all three selected at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Gastibeltza has produced three short films, includingAnti, which won awards at several international festivals.
